EDIT: Check out the linked thread, OP made some clarifications. It seems he added what he thought was a bookmark inside Google Search app, but it was a collection instead.
This makes it a problem of "confusing UI" and also whether collections that are not shared with anyone should be subject to moderation too. Which is still a problem, but of a lesser magnitude. --END OF EDIT

To add, it's also not about inner workings - or not only. A lot of "apps" on PC's are just clients - but clients that the company has control over so it can steal all your info.
When you use something like a browser to access something, you have MUCH more control over that client. Corps love apps because it lets them be real sneaky and steal/exfil all sorts of data from you.
not to enforce gender roles but a computer should NOT fucking have apps okay. if I wanted an app I'd go on my phone my laptop is for Programs. I mean this.
#and also show you ads that you cannot block#install Firefox#PSA use browser based stuff whenever you can

I'm finally digging into my ES backlog, starting with Shades of Yesterday. I can tell that the writer's actually familiar with fountain pens and it delights me tremendously
Everything in this passage is a real fountain pen filling mechanism, as far as I can tell:
"filling your pen with an eyedropper" - eyedropper fillers, exactly what they sound like. And yep, some do have an unfortunate tendency to leak through their screwed-together bits.
"a rubber sac inside the barrel" - squeeze sac fillers, where the ink container is a little flexible sac you can squish and unsquish, sucking up ink to refill the pen. I think this type was more common in the past and has mostly been superseded by piston and vacuum fillers, but they still exist (Pilot Metropolitans come with a squeeze-style converter, for example)
"the manipulation of air pressure to suck ink into the pen" - I think this one's referring to vacuum fillers but I'm not 100% certain?? It's the kind of filling style I have the least familiarity with.
"refills with a simple twist of the base" - piston filler, maybe?
That being said, it's possible that all of these lines are just describing variations of sac-based filling systems, since Fallen London is set in the late 1800s and (according to Wikipedia and what I can scrape together from a bunch of fountain pen nerdery sites) all of the early fountain pen non-eyedropper filling designs were based around sacs rather than the plastic tubes that most piston/vacuum-filler converters use today. The mechanisms for deflating the sac varied, but the principle was the same - squish sac, put nib of pen in ink, unsquish sac to pull ink into the pen.

Full disclaimer that I'm not a pen expert or historian so I could be wrong about some of these

Use Firefox
seems that Chrome has around 60-65% market share, so it’s not totally dominating the market yet but it’s worrying that we’re basically reliant on Apple and Microsoft to hold the line.

Begging Tumblr users to finally discover Linux
Everyone keeps complaining about Google and advising to use Firefox etc while still using OS produced by Microsoft which is just like Google maybe worse. Linux is literally free and out there, there are so many different distributions produced in different countries and so much free open source software. Go grab yourself a flashdisk and do yourself a favour. Tbh if you get Ubuntu it is very easy to set up(seriously if you managed to download firefox and add Ublock you probably are very much capable of installing Ubuntu), has shit ton of support online, comes with many useful programs preinstalled and you can even get an add-on to make it look more like windows. Nothing is stopping you
Edit: people are also recommending Linux Mint a lot so you can give that a try! (Personally I have never used it but it looks very windows-like at least when it comes to the UI layout)
#the weirdest part about Ubuntu is that you do not have icons on your desktop but an add-on can fix that#as someone who has windows on notebook ubuntu on desktop and whose uni uses ubuntu on all pcs I can say ubuntu is way better#you can also use emulator for programs that were only made for windows#but many good open source programs have a linux version any way#and it has an app store so installing new programmes is way easier#linux#firefox

the "no longer allow adblockers" is not strictly true, however, what is true is that the adblockers that will work under the new Chrome will be purposefully crippled to the point they will be significantly worse at doing their job than they are now. TL;DR: switching from Google Chrome to another Chromium-based browser will likely work for another year, in long term Firefox is still a winner because uBlock Origin already works better on Firefox than on Chromium-based browser.
Also honestly a significant number of people (I am guessing "most of them" but I do not have any data to prove it, so I will just use anecdotes) did not switch to Chrome because of its technical capabilities.
Anecdote 1: Google used their platform before to get people off Internet Explorer 6 by placing a banner on YouTube telling IE6 users to switch to other browsers. IE6 was an incredibly horrible browser and back then it was done in a way that did not favour their own browser. Today Microsoft uses Bing's search results to tell people that Edge is good enough when users attempt to search for chrome or firefox. I also remember "advertisements" for Google Chrome happening on Google Search too.
Anecdote 2: Back in the early 10s installing some applications like avast antivirus also installed Google Chrome and made it the users default browser if you did not select custom installation and unchecked these.
Yes, there was a point where Firefox visibly struggled in performance until 2017 (where a major rewrite of its internals named "Firefox Quantum" was introduced) which resulted in some users switching. That being said I do not believe for a second that Chrome's usage percentage is a result of its technical superiority.

The most popular browsers in different countries in 2012 and 2022.

Side by side comparison of what it's like opening the same recipe link in Chrome vs. Firefox
#The fucking HALF SCREEN AD. ARE YOU JOKING#There was also a full screen ad with an almost invisible x button you had to close before you could see the other ads#I believe I actually have uBlock origin installed on both browsers but it doesn't work on Chrome#Not sure what the Firefox one looks like without it but#Definitely recommend Firefox with ad blocker. It's literally the only way I can fucking cook anything
